Blog SEO: Tips to Help Optimise Your Blog Posts

Updated: 21 August 2025

Is blogging still relevant for businesses?

YES!

That old saying, content is king, has never been more relevant, and blogging is still a key component of any online marketing strategy.

Around 90% of businesses still use blogs to help market their brand. But with more than 600 million blogs on the internet and 7.5 million blog posts going out each day, how can your blog compete with the sheer volume of content on the internet?

“The introduction of AI tools into the content creation space has signaled to a lot of businesses that they don’t need “human” writing. Readers want authenticity, and while AI can help you deliver content fast, it removes the heart and spirit that comes with delivering good quality content,” says SOMS Digital’s resident wordsmith, Lynn.

Here are a few ways you can make your blog content matter in this evolving digital landscape:

#1. Find a Main Keyword

Finding a keyword that’s relevant to your blog post is a great way to get noticed by Google and potential customers. Do a little research around what people are searching with regards to the topics you’re writing about.

Is it “where to get pasta near me?” or perhaps it’s “authentic Montessori schools” – try and create your blog post around your well-researched keyword, but make sure it’s included naturally. Stick to one relevant keyword, as more than that can leave Google a little confused.

Another tip: most SEO professionals agree that a keyword shouldn’t appear more than once for every 200 words of copy.

#2. Optimise Your Blog Post

Including your keyword in every paragraph or second sentence is a big no-no and will only cause your site to rank lower on Google’s search results. However, there are a few key places you can include relevant keywords on your page.

According to Lynn, internal linking is “another great way to get your content noticed by Google, and it allows the search engine to understand the structure of your website.”

This linking guides users to relevant content, which can be a good way to keep them browsing your website a little longer. It also helps distribute page authority, helping distribute SEO value across your website. High-authority pages are often popular blog posts or your homepage. Linking to these pages helps support new or less well-known, such as new blog posts.

“Don’t be afraid to link to other other credible blogs and websites as this shows readers and AI algorithms that your content is well-researched, building trust and credibility,” says Lynn.

You want to try and include your keyword in your blog’s title and meta description. To learn more about this, check out our blog post on Why Meta Titles and Descriptions are Important.

#3. Don’t Be Afraid of Plugins

Technology can be a wonderful tool, so make sure you use it! Most Content Management Systems (CMS) such as WordPress provide plugins to help streamline the process of ticking off your SEO boxes.

Yoast SEO and AIOSEO are two popular options. These tools help analyse everything from content length to meta title and focus keyword placement.

#4. Think About Mobile Responsiveness

Around 60% of searches are conducted via mobile devices. Therefore, search engines place a huge emphasis on the mobile version of content over the desktop version when indexing and ranking web pages.

Google offers a mobile-friendly test tool that allows you to find out whether your site is mobile-friendly, flagging any issues and how to fix them.
